Web GIS & Spatial Data Platforms

Map-based decision-support applications and the spatial data services behind them, from database to browser.

Overview

Since 2018 I have built web-GIS applications that put scientific and administrative data in front of the people who act on it. At Pathway Technologies that meant municipal profiling tools, a Municipal Energy Planning Tool and an incident reporting system for Nepal Police. At ICIMOD it meant dozens of Tethys applications for Afghanistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan and Pakistan: watershed characterization, agricultural drought watch, HIWAT severe-weather assessment, and flash-flood and streamflow prediction tools. At RIMES it meant regional decision-support products for South Asia built with React and Next.js.

Most of this work sits below the map. I design PostgreSQL/PostGIS databases, publish layers through GeoServer, serve multidimensional NetCDF/HDF model output through THREDDS Data Server and ncWMS, and write the automated ETL that keeps satellite, model and observation data current. I have run the Linux servers these applications live on, and I created ol-plus, an open-source JavaScript plugin that extends OpenLayers with data visualization features.

What I can help with

  • Decision-support web applications

Interactive map dashboards that combine model forecasts, satellite products and observations with analytics, charts and controls designed around how scientists and government users actually make decisions.

  • Spatial databases and geoservices

PostgreSQL/PostGIS schema design, data migration (including ODK/GeoODK field surveys) and OGC services through GeoServer, so the same data feeds web maps, desktop GIS and reports.

  • Serving gridded scientific data

Installing and operating THREDDS Data Server and ncWMS so NetCDF/HDF model and satellite output can be browsed, mapped and subset over the web without copying files around.

  • Automated ETL pipelines

Scheduled Python jobs that pull from Google Earth Engine, model runs and observation networks, process the data and publish it, so dashboards stay current without manual updates.

  • Front-end mapping

Map interfaces in OpenLayers, Vue.js, React and Next.js, including custom visualization components, cross-browser testing and UI/UX upgrades to existing tools.

  • Deployment and operations

Release coordination through Git workflows, Linux server administration (Ubuntu, CentOS), Apache Tomcat and long-term operational support of production applications.

Ways to work together

Modernising legacy web GIS applications

Move an ageing map application to a maintainable React/Next.js front end with MapLibre GL, keeping the data services and the users' workflows intact.
