The challenge
Agriculture agencies in the region needed regular, country-specific information on agricultural drought. That meant bringing satellite, model and ground-observation datasets, stored in different formats and on different update cycles, into a single operational view that country teams could check and act on.
Approach
Suman developed and deployed the drought watch applications on the Tethys Platform, first for Nepal, Bangladesh and Bhutan (2019-2021) and later for Pakistan (2021-2022).
He built automated ETL workflows and visualisation services for satellite, model and observation data using Google Earth Engine, NetCDF/HDF processing and PostGIS. He also installed and ran a THREDDS Data Server to serve the multidimensional datasets.
He worked with scientists and country teams to refine use cases, add new datasets, analytics and controls, and improve the UI/UX. Releases and operational maintenance were coordinated through Git-based workflows.
